Question:

Anyone feel sad when school districts can't afford to send a special needs student to a special school?

It's totally unfair!! Special needs students are then place in mainstream schools in an ISOLATED setting. They are NOT allowed to talk to the general education students. Our school system is SO corrupt. At least my district doesn't do this. But they have done other things that are CORRUPT like offering "fake" inclusion classes. I get so sad...but the only thing I can do is educate other people about our "corrupt" school system.

Anyone feel the same way? I feel like teachers aren't doing enough for special needs students. How do we change this?

  1. Special needs students should be in the general education setting whenever possible.  I have never heard of the mainstreaming/inclusion model you have written about where the GenEd teacher can not speak to the Special Ed. Students.    I don't know what state you are in...but you should call the department of education in your state and seek their advice.

  2. I've actually experienced this! My step-daughter is deaf and has learning disabilities. She currently lives with her mother during the week and the school program is AWFUL! She is in a deaf-ed program where there are only 2 classes (in a regular ed school). One is for kids 6-9 and the other is for kids 10-14. She's behind in most areas, but they say she is in the best placement. The case manager told us that we could challenge the district, but that we would lose because they are sending kids out of district due to financial restraints. We are in the midst of a due process hearing right now!

These school systems worry about their budgets not about their kids!

  3. its sad but modern theories says that a child should not be send altogether to a special school as that make him conservative and self centered and he lacks communication skills too....

its better to send them to an integrated school that is a normal school with trained professionals to educate and handel these children better...

its sad that your state doesnot offer these services but who knows you can be the torch bearer and help these children

    wish you luck...

  4. Sad no I don't feel sad, I feel bloody angry! How do we change this? The only way we can change this is by speaking out instead of only feeling that the truth and the reality of inclusion can be spoken about anonymously on the Internet.

  5. No not at all.  Who cut the school budget anyway?  Have you asked yourself that question?  You do know who implemented 'No Child Left Behind' don't you?

Vote for someone who has a better education policy.  Someone who realizes that they got where they are because of those who taught them so why s***w those people over?

  6. What state do you live in.... that doesn't happen in up-state NY schools! We have many in-school programs and special placements for many students. Everyone rides the same bus system and enters the school all at the same time..... no separation.

  7. I don't feel sad, I feel MAD!! Because I KNOW the corruption and lies that schools give to parents and sped kids.

IT's not that they CAN"T afford to send student to special school, it's because they WON'T.

Federal special ed law IDEA states that schools can NOT use LACK OF FUNDS as a reason to refuse services or ANYTHING a sped child needs.

And if that child NEEDS a special school to recieve FAPE, then by God they are to get it !!

But as you probably already know, schools in USA  *THINK* they are above the federal laws because  NO ONE will MAKE them follow the laws so they continue to be corrupt and hurt the children and the parents.

There have been MANY parents across the country who have written letters to newspapers, talked on televised school board meetings, tried to contact talk show hosts, contacted state and federal gov't officials..

    ALL on DEAF EARS.

I don't know WHAT can be done about all this. They ONLY thing I see is for schools just to follow the laws and DO RIGHT. But that' ain't ABOUT to happen.

People seem to tend to forget that  WE as TAXPAYERS are paying these sorry people's PAYCHECKS to do this HURT to OUR children!

Some reasons why sped teachers aren't doing enough-

    1) THey were never trained or trained properly on how to teach sped students.

    2) They are told by their bosses to NOT help the children so they can use the money for football fields  (TRUE!!)

    3) They just plain do not care and dont' want to help. They KNOW they will NOT get in trouble for this and will keep on.

The school you mention is even violating IDEA law by placing these children in ISOLATION, they should be in with ALL the kids UNLESS the child can not learn and progress in that environment.

Schools also do a LOT of CORRUPT things that parents don't know about, like you say, not letting the sped kids talk to the regular kids.  That school could have a discrimination suit slapped on them so fast if the parents knew about this..
