Caroline strictly speaking Strathclyde Buses used to add 200 to the normal service to denote a school bus. Thus in parts of the city services 221/229/216 for example ran alongside the 21/29/16.

FirstGroup currently have small numbers of American style school buses allocated to various fleets throughout the UK. A large number are in the First West Yorkshire fleet and I beleieve First Glasgow No 1 has some at it`s Larkfiled Garage on the southside. First Glasgow No2 has 5 allocated to Dumbarton Garage for school contracts in the Johnstone/Elderslie area. However the biggest contribution to getting cars off the school run, would be to force parents to send their kids to the nearest school to their house and stop all this freedom of choice nonsense.

Absolutely correct!   I have been muttering that for years, it makes so much sense you would think our wonderful PMs might have thought this of this one before now!

Good one!    ALSO bring in compulsory health and eye tests every 1O years, there are a lot of "Flatcaps" who are out for their Sunday drive,  who drive as slow as they walk!  Mainly because they cannot darn well see over the steering wheel!!!

I had a bus service to my shool when I went. and it still runs now (I see it now and again)

The school used a local bus company with several coaches that use to do two runs each and collect in villages/towns/streets in a certain radius from school.

it was rubbish..........cold and wet in the winter, sweating in the summer! though I must admit, it was pretty full and must have helped congestion somewhat, our school held 1400 pupils so quite large

No, we'd have more busses because, like the yanks, no-one would walk to school anymore. After a few years, you wouldn't need a bus to go downhill, the kids would just roll.

Well I see that the less serious have already answered you.

due to the nature of our country the fact that most schools are in densely  populated areas such a scheme would not work effectively over here. In some of the more rural areas the county runs school bus services for those whose journey to school would otherwise be impractical. In the cities there is an existing and comprehensive bus system in place, and often the childrens costs are subsidised by the authority depending on distance travelled.

We have never had proper school buses in Glasgow. You just had to get the normal bus along with everyone else.
