  1. Depends on which concerts you are talking about.  If it is the classical or operatic concerts you should get there a little bit before it opens if you want to get a seat on the lawn up front so  you can see what is going on.  If you just want to be there so you can hear the music and don't care where you sit, doesn't matter when you get there.  You can hear throughout the park and actually out of the park and out on the streets.

If you are talking about the popular, or Rock concerts, well, it's a whole different thing.  Then you need to b there very early and wait around.  People have been known to camp out.  I know years ago when I went to see Elton John in the Park we went very very early and got very lucky that found friends who had been around since the  night before so we had good seats.  But again, you can hear everywhere, it's a matter of how much you really want to see, and if you get there later, how much you like pushing to get up to the front to see what is going on.

I've always loved going to the Parks concerts, especially with a bunch of friends, bringing food, usually from Zabars and just enjoying the evening.  It's what makes NY special.  Now I live in NY, but have a house in the Berkshires, so admit, I go to Tanglewood, it's easier., even if you have to pay for it.

  2. It depends on the concert.  Central Park Summer Stage and Prospect Park Celebrate Brooklyn have a range from hip indy/world music/hip hop/big names etc. and it depends on who is playing on a particular night.  They are free except for very few benefit nights.  Other parks have great concerts too - check out this site for info: http://gonyc.about.com/cs/music/a/summer...

  3. you need to get there way before they open it up...people camp out for days..

  4. 2 summers ago I saw Lauren Hill, Fishbone, and De La Soul in the Park. It was a free concert. They ended up trying to put people on line ( be there early for that kind of scenario) In the end when everyone was let in people ran like crazy to the front. You can get there a little early I would say about 30min-1hr, but in the end the fastest gets the best spot
