Hope you have a good time. The thing that most people grumble about is the french and France purely because it is bred into them. Maybe if they took the time to learn the language and didnt dress as young tarts then they wouldnt have such preconceved ideas inforced during their stay.

sorry but i must say france is horrible i went with my school and people were eating out of bins and there were beggers in the town and people have guns there and also the men a pervs they look down your tops and you dont no what there saying about you for all you no they might be standing there sayin rude things about you !!! i h8ed every single day there

We are going on Friday, to Bordeaux for the second time and Archacon. So much to see and do, have a wonderful time.

As well as the places mentioned by other answerers, check out La Rochelle and St Emillion if you have time.

We travel to France as much as possible, for our main holiday we visit somewhere we know and try something new. It is going to take years!!

bbelou  one they are not allowed to carry guns in france even the police do not  carry them so  that's a hugh lie ,  sound to me  you had a bad time due to you was not allowed to do what you wanted  here in France but  there  are  some great area here and  some good  people as well  .

Aquitaine is a great place, plenty of beautiful places, old cities, long sandy beaches, good wine places if you are old enough, have a look at their tourist site if you want an idea of it

Thanks for the laugh, bbelou. People carrying guns in France? I'm still laughing. Next time you want to rant about the French please learn about our laws first before you try to invent something. Only the police has the right to carry guns, gun ownership is tightly regulated and anyone carrying a gun ready to use in the street goes to prison.

I have never eaten out of a bin, we do have street people in Paris, like in London or New York. They are a sad part of life. There is also a migration of petty thieves and professional beggars from the rest of Europe during the tourist season in Paris. The price to pay for being the most visited city in the world. Keep an eye on your belonging and everything will be all right.

I've just come back from a week's holiday in the Aquitaine region. I drove down to Bordeaux with my girlfriend and we had an excellent holiday.

Bordeaux is an absolutely stunning city; I'd really recommend a week there. Don't stay in the main Youth Hostel near Gare St. Jean though. It's quite unpleasant. Try to find a smaller hostel in town (I know there are a few).

If you've got a car, head out to the Medoc region for some great wine tours and wine tasting (the most expensive bottle of wine ever is from this region: Chateau Lafite). If you're into surfing, you can't miss Lacanau. Best surfing in France.

The highest sand dune in Europe is also here (Dune de Pilat). We climbed it and it's exhausting but the view from the top is mind-blowing. It's also great fun to run/roll back down!
