Can anyone help me with this Math problem? It's for ordering- not homework!?

I need to order lace but I have to add in the shipping.

1 pound of lace is $8.00 to ship.

150 yards are in a pound

I need 11.5 yards to make a 1 garment.

How much $ to I need to add to the price of each garment.

Thank-you, I am an artist and I don't normally need to figure stuff like this out. I was doing it with a co-worker and we are both getting a different amount! UGH!

  1. Missing two key facts.

    How much is the lowest amount you can have shipped to you.

    How many garments are you wanting to make.

    If you want to make 13, well then $8.00 as you'll have to buy a pound.

    If you can buy it by the yard, it'll theoretically cost you 6 cents to ship, but no company ships a yard of lace.

    -edit- after reading other replies and the problem again, you'll want to add an extra 6 cents to cover shipping cost for the lace per yard.

    So if you charge $10 each, you'll want to charge $10.70.

  2. you don't give the price for the yards of lace, so it is difficult to tell you how much to add to the price of each garment...

    if all you are adding in is the price of shipping for the lace, then:

    $8 to ship 1 pound of lace

    1 pound of lace is 150 yards

    in one garment, there is 11.5 yards of lace.

    what percent of one pound of lace do you use for one garment?

    11.5/150 = x/100

    we can add/subtract/multiply/divide by the same amount to both sides of an equals equation and still maintain the equality.  We want to solve for the unknown variable by getting it all by itself on one side of the equation and multiplied only by 1.

    (11.5/150)*100 = (x/100)*100

    1150/150 = x

    7.67 = x

    you use 7.67% of a pound to make one garment.  7.67% of the $8 shipping charge is:

    7.67/100 = x/8

    (7.67/100)*8 = (x/8)*8

    0.6136 = x

    so, you should charge $0.62 per garment to cover the lace's shipping charges at $8 per 150-yard pound.

    You can also figure it out by:

    for 150 yards in a pound (which ships for $8), how many garments can you make, at 11.5 yards per garment?

    150 yards/11.5 yards = 13 garments with some leftover material

    13garments * $x = $8 shipping

    13*$x = $8

    13*$x/13 = $8/13

    x = $0.615

    round up to $0.62 per garment to cover the shipping costs for the lace

    To check:

    how many 11.5 yard garments can you make with 150-yard per pounds of lace?

    150/11.5 = 13 (with some lace left over).

    13 garments @ $0.62 each (to cover shipping) = 13*$0.62 = $8.06

    $8.06 will cover your $8 shipping charge.

  3. 62 cents
