  2. Charles Nelson Perkins was born on the 16th of July,1936, behind the old telegraph station in the Northern Territory, Australia. He was the son of  an aboriginal father and a European mother. The first few years of his life his mum educated him the ways of the Arrente (his ancestor's tribe).  At the age of 8, he was voluntarily taken (his mum gave permission) to go to a Christian school, St Francis. He was badly beaten there.

He played for Britain's Everton Football club  in the 1950's. In the late 1960's Charles entered the Aboriginal political stage. In 1965 he led a bus tour to show how bad the outback settlements were and how badly treated the Aborigines were. He received an arts degree and became the first Aborigine to get a University degree in 1966.

Kidney problems had brought his soccer career to an end. In 1971, he was unable to attend his fathers funeral at Mt Isa due to kidney problems. In 1972 he would have a kidney transplant.

In 1967 only 9 percent of aboriginal children made it past year 8 . A NSW survey found only 3,000 at primary and 500 at high schools.

He had a wife called Eileen, two daughters, Hettie and Rachel, and a son, Adam.

Charles Perkins died on Wednesday the 18th of October 2000 aged 64, due to the kidney problems. He was the longest surviving kidney transplant patient.
