I got an M.Sc. in marketing back in 1997 and have worked in digital media ever since - quite a large part of it in sports marketing. Back in the late 90s I worked for 365 Corporation, which was Europe's first digital media company to IPO and they have several sports web sites with large audiences. I since went on to work for Quokka, which was the first broadband sports company. We owned the digital rights to a host of major sporting events and produced all of the official web sites for these.

Since then I've been working as a marketing strategy consultant and running a viral marketing agency, but I did manage to do some strategic consultancy for one of the main sponsors of the Athens Olympics so it's definitely possible to follow your dream. In my experience it all comes down to where you're based as some regions are easier to find sports marketing jobs in than others. New York and London would be the 2 best bets.
