  1. In 1990, I had my 73 Plymouth Duster stolen.  It was the first car I ever owned and had held on to it.  I got it in 1984.  I got a call from LAPD about a week and a half later.  The detective told me they had my car in impound at a downtown LA yard.  I asked how they got it.  He told me the police pulled it over and found it was on the "hot sheet".  They said the man driving it had "bought" it from some men a few days before.  He was pulled over in LA.  I lived in Orange County.(Fullerton)  I went to the yard and bailed it out.  It was clean, the new battery was still in it, but the stereo and speakers were gone.  I never expected to see it again.

  2. Yes, I had a car stolen once. There seems to be two types of car theft. If they just stole it to drive round in, they usually abandon them and the police usually find them within a few days, although they can often be badly damaged, but there are also cars that are stolen for selling on or for breaking in to parts, and those types of theft are extremely difficult for the police to trace.

  3. My '55 VW was stolen a number of years ago.  They caught the guy driving it (I was told he was a gang-banger).

I had the car towed to a shop, and the shop put sand in the transmission, dirt in the gas tank and water in the engine so they could bilk the insurance company for more bucks.

Of course, the shop was going to say the theif did it, but since they caught the guy driving the car it's a pretty safe bet he didn't.

It only took a week to recover the car.

  4. no.

  5. I've had a car stolen some years back. The police found it near a field all banged up. They towed it to a police garage for fingerprints. The  same night it was set on fire and  burned to nothing. The police found it the next day after it was reported stolen in the same town that I live in. I didn't have comprehensive insurance on it, so it was a total loss.

  6. No never had a vehicle stolen, but have handled plenty of stolen vehicle claims.  Report the claim to his insurance company, assuming he has comprehensive coverage.  He will have to complete paperwork including a theft affidavit and give the claims rep a recorded statement.

The insurance company usually waits 30 days before settlement is considered.  In the mean time, most policies allow for a replacement vehicle even if you do not have rental coverage on the policy.  You have to wait 48 hours after you report the loss.  If the vehicle is recovered, the rental stops.
