This happened to me last month one day before I was due to fly.  They told me that as it had been stolen you couldn't renew in one day as they had to do security checks.  The earliest I could have a new one would be 10 days.

yes it takes 4 hours and  a cost of about £110

You are joking. It is not the same as just 'renewing' a passport.  You have to fill in a complete new application, with a doctor or somebody to OK your form, and give their passport details in as a security check.  Then you also have to fill in a lost/stolen form which you get from the Post Office at the same time as you get your new application form.
