I know green spotted puffers like to eat other fish but I'm curious if anyone has had success with some mollies being left alone IF they were already in the tank when the puffer was added.

  1. Yes you can.  They make good tank mates for at least a couple of years.  Both species require similar water conditions and are often listed as compatible.  I have a GSP with 5 mollies, 1 pleco, and 1 pictus catfish in a 29 gallon tank.  They have been together for 6 months with no problems.  My GSP is about 4" long and the mollies are about 2".  The first few days they were together the GSP nipped the tails on 3 mollies.  After about a week the mollies learned to stay clear.  Now they are all doing very well together and I haven't noticed nipped fins in several months.  The mollies swim all over the tank.  The GSP kinda hovers in the mid tank section but gets active when food is added.  The pleco and catfish usually swim or rest near the bottom.  My water temp is maintained at a consistent 78 degrees, PH is about 7.2, and I change out 5 gallons of water every week.  With each water change I add 5 tsp salt.  I feed flake food, sinking shrimp pellets, and cichlid pellets every day.  I feed one fourth of a piece of frozen shrimp with shell on once a week.  My fish are doing great and my puffer always has a nice happy yellow glow on his head and bright white tummy.  The GSP is my favorite fish next to my oscars which are kept in a 75gallon tank.  Good luck with your GSP.  They will mix well with your mollies.

  2. NO! you can not have puffers with mollies because they will destroy the mollies fins, they are best for a puffer tank only, I wouldn't even put them with malawi cichlids! never mind mollies.

  3. My advice, no. You'll have problems, puffer willl attack your molly, unles you have huge tank.

  4. No.  I would never keep mollie with puffers.

Puffers will fin-nip anything else in the tank.   Seriously. Your better off having them in a one-species tank.

  5. Be alert always about it,It is matter of murder one fish from other......

  6. I really think you're going to have issues with this. Puffers are mean little things that will quite literally nip your mollies to death. Even if the mollies were established first, it's not going to much matter. Mollies are not very territorial and will not stand up to the puffers. You might (and I stress *might*) be able to pull it off in a very big tank (55+ gallons) with a small number of fish (4 or 5 mollies and 1 or 2 puffers) if you had a TON of plant cover and a lot of hiding spaces. But even that would probably not last permanently.

You're really better off not playing with fire... Or consider a 15 gallon dwarf puffer only tank. They are neat little guys, but just not meant to be friendly to other fish...

  7. Yes with enough structure in the tank.
