  1. Yes, there is a ton of historical information on the internet.  If you're looking for first hand experience, almost every bus in Florence will get you close enough to find it.  Just jump on a bus and when you see a huge church get off, you're probably there.  Second, the inside is gorgeous, but make sure you have someone willing to get on the floor and lay back to get a great picture.  They have pamphlets there so you can self tour.  You don't need to pay for one of the tours being offered outside.  I would definitely recommend that you walk up, but I would say that I would never do it again.  Once was enough for me.  It's completely exhausting.  I smoke and had a hard time making it to the top.  I had to stop a few times.  I also get motion sickness and had a hard time coming down because it's this very narrow spiral staircase.  That being said I will never forget and and don't regret doing it at all.  We were there in March '07 and arrived at the line to get in about noon.  It was only about a 20 minute wait to get it.

  2. This is the Duomo website in English: http://www.duomofirenze.it/index-eng.htm If you follow the History link, there are descriptions of the exterior and interior parts of the church, bell tower, and baptistry. There is also a link to festivals celebrated at the Duomo and tourist information (opening times, etc.).

This website provides an overview and some links to specific details on some of the art: http://gallery.euroweb.hu/database/churc...

Additional information: http://www.sacred-destinations.com/italy... This one is focused on the history of Piazza Duomo: http://www.vps.it/new_vps/articolo_eng.p...

What kind of information are you looking for? Is there anything specific that you need to know?
