Question:

Anyone have advice on ways to get the word out that I have horses I need to find homes for due to relocation?

Thanks everyone for so many ideas...we have tried some of them already and will put in place some of the other ideas. First of all let me assure all of you that this is a very upsetting situation and one we never wanted to face. Also, we will most definitely make sure they go to great homes and I AM willing to do whatever leg-work is necessary to assure that. This is one of the BIG reasons I am choosing not to run an add in any newspapers...word of mouth will hopefully help control the type of people we contact and not just the random masses. For those who asked we are located in SW Virginia near Roanoke.

  1. Put an ad in the local newspapers

List your horses on websites like these:

    www.dreamhorse.com

    www.horsetopia.com

Put an ad in the Farmer's Market Bulletin

List your horses on Craig's list

Put up fliers at feed stores and tack stores like Tractor Supply or Horse Town

There are tons of other options too!

I hope this helps and good luck!

  2. Word of mouth.

    Riding Club

    Pony Club

    Local Bridleways Association

    Local Press

    Livery stables/riding schools

    Tack shop

    Feed merchants

    Farrier

    Vet

Just a few to be getting on with.  But please be careful who you let these horses go to!  think of it as if yo are putting your mother in the home.  You want the best for her.

  3. Run an ad in the paper

    Word of mouth

Place a flyer in the local feed store

  4. horsetopia.com

    dreamhorse.com

    equine.com

    post flyers at:

    local stables

    feed stores

    etc.

  5. If you are trying to "give" them away call local riding schools, therapeutic riding schools, 4H, FFA, local high schools, respected trainers ....

Some will pay small amounts but love the donations,  try to get a first offer buy back so you know your horses are loved and not just flipped or auctioned ...

  6. I'm looking for a horse!

What kind of horses are they?

    Where are you located?

How much you selling them for?

    Email me at lilval1994@yahoo.ca

P.S. I think you can do all those things that other people have said and you can also just post it on Yahoo Answers! it worked!

  7. Call your local news channel

  8. Getting the word out is the easy part.

Taking precautions with prospective homes, however, is where the work is:

Whether you love or hate the Fugly blog, the story of Colin, AKA Petersburg Knight, is full of lessons for everyone who is placing a horse.

Basically if a person isn't going to do the footwork to make sure these people wanting their horse are what they say they are, they might as well go ahead and run them through the sale themself...

Follow the thread...Colin's story made the affiliate FOX local news.   It's an eye opener....and best of luck rehoming your horses.

  9. Put an ad in the newspaper

Post them online on sites like dreamhorse.com

Put flyers in local tack stores

    Tell anyone you can

    Talk to local barn owners

    Put flyers in local barns

    Hope this helps! :)

  10. www.dreamhorse.com

    www.horseville.com

    wwww.equinehits.com

  11. It would help to know where you are located (state) for us to be better able to assist you here.

  12. http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites.ht... put an add in the farm and garden section you should get a few responses

  13. To bad you weren't closer, i would have helped you out I own a rescue...Have your tried dreamhorse, i got several horse through there.  Also try any stable by you or feed stores, they may know a rescue that will help you.

  14. Go on horse sale websites and add your horses. equine.com is my favorite site as it is easy to use and has many horses available, but here are some other websites that you could use to try to sell your horse.

    www.equinenow.com

    www.horsetopia.com

    www.equinehits.com

    www.dreamhorse.com

    www.horsefinders.com

    www.horseclicks.com

    www.horseville.com

    www.agdirect.com

You can also check at any local barns and see if there are people there interested in buying a horse, or if the barn wants to buy a horse for anyone to use. Good Luck!

  15. HORSETOPIA

  16. If you lived near me i would buy them from you. But i live in Mankato and i have no idea where you live.

But you can put it in the newspapper. Or go to your local feed store and put bullitens up.

What ever you do make sure they do go to good homes that would sell them either. This is why people buy horses forever. You cant trust anyone these days and what they are going to do with your horse. So make, MAKE sure they are a good home for them. I cant stress that enough.

  17. put them on

    http://www.dreamhorse.com

    http://www.equinehits.com

    http://www.equinenow.com

    http://www.craigslist.com

i know you want them to go to loving and approved homes, so that is why you get to choose who buys your horses. it is ok to put them online.

  18. Some of us maybe interested in them. If you could post some pictures and prices maybe we could help.

  19. You could put an ad in the paper, or also go to craigslist and put them there.  You also might go to petfinder.com and see how you can list them there...

EDIT:  Actually, I'm not sure that individuals can really list their own animals at petfinder...it seems that maybe it's more for rescues and things like that...sorry...you could always check it out, though:)

  20. You don't state if you're trying to sell them or simply trying to find them new homes.

The best way would be to call your surrounding stables and ask them to post add.  I found my favorite horse that way, a lady called the barn I was riding at and where I'd just sold my last horse with a 4 yr old AQHA gelding that they HAD to sell that day.  He was with me for over 20 years!
