As most F1 fans know today is the 26th anniversary of Gilles death at Zolder while qualifying for the Belgian GP. Anyone want to share their favorite memories of Gilles?

Mine is his battle with René Arnoux at the 1979 Frech Grand Prix. Watching Gilles battle wheel to wheel with the rookie Arnoux is one of the greatest racing battles I have ever seen, in any form of racing.

Salut Gilles!

  1. No, im too young

  2. Sadly I am too young as well.  Although he sounds like a great man and an amazing driver.

  3. Dijon in `79 was one of the most, if not THE most memorable Grand Prix ever.

  4. Montreal 1981, finished 3rd even though he spent a lot of the race with the broken Ferrari's nosecone blocking the view of the road ahead, too young to watch it live but have seen it on DVD, great shame he died so young.

  5. Dijon 79 was great, I agree, but Arnoux would have blown off into the distance like Jabouille if he hadn't had fuel pick-up trouble. My favourite was his battle with Jones at Montreal in the same year...Villeneuve led for about 2/3 of the race before Jones finally got past him in a MUCH quicker Williams. Somehow Villeneuve was only a second Jones behind at the finish, quite how he was able to keep up was beyond me.
