  1. I learnt the English Counties by putting them into alphabetical order and singing to a nursery rhyme tune!!  In alphabetical order you learn how many start with A or B etc.

For the states of USA I have a jigsaw which helps me a lot.  In addition to which I still sometimes sing

  4. Absolutely!  When I was very young, I was taught how to sing all fifty states in ALPHABETICAL ORDER!  And to this day, I can still remember it exactly!  (My parents learned it well, too....)  Music can be an astonishing tool when it comes to teaching kids.  Hope this helps!

  5. I also learned them to a song in elementary school.  I think the song is called "The Fifty Nifty United States."  It was sheet music so I am sure it is available out there somewhere.  I also learned them alphabetically.

After learning all of them it became easier to learn other facts about them like the thirteen original, and the capitals.  I also used little mnemonic tricks like someone else mentioned.  ("Hey, how's your mom?" "I don't know." "Juno?" "No, Alaska." (I'll ask her.)
