  1. From the design the middle ages, exactly when I havn't a clue.....

  2. Interesting!

Have you tried reversing the colors to make the design the dark color and the outline the light color?  That may make the emblem clearer.

How big is the item?  Is it more the size of a button or larger, like a badge?

It does look like a family crest or a coat of arms, here is a website which you may find helpful:  http://genealogy.about.com/od/heraldry/H...

It contains links to sites which help you decipher the symbols and emblems on the crest...

  3. Carl... that looks very, very old. If you look closely there's a family coat of arms (crest) on it, which may be helpful. Where did he find it in the UK, USA ?  Our family crest looks a bit like it, from Italy.

  4. I think it is more likely to be a button than a badge and is probably from some military or civilian uniform, or it could be a livery button, what looks like a pin may be the metal bit it was fixed on by, rather than being sewn.

Metal detecting websites are probably the best places to look, especially if there’s a group in your local area.  There’s an interesting one here for instance at Colchester which has lots of pictures of buttons, I’ve had a quick look and couldn’t see yours, but it might give you some ideas, at least about what type it isn’t:
