Anyone have any information on a ''gut'' cherry bush?

I don't know if this is what you're looking for or not, but there's a fruit called a chokecherry.  The reason I think it might be the same is that there's a popular children's adventure book called "Hatchet" in which the main character discovers a chokecherry bush and refers to it as "gut cherries".

At any rate, I couldn't find anything on Wikipedia about gut cherries so I'm guessing it may not be the right name.
