Question:

Anyone have color ideas?

My girlfriend and I are trying to redecorate our living room. Right now our walls are just white, and we spend so much time in there we'd just like to make it really nice. We just purchased this gorgeous black entertainment center w/ distressed edges. We would like to add some color without going too crazy, so what would be a good color to paint the walls? We want to do an accent wall as well. Also, we're planning on getting a new couch soon, which needs to be a pretty deep color because we have dogs. Any suggestions for color combinations? We prefer more neutral, earthy tones and would still like the room to look bright and open. Thanks for answering!

  1. play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think "straw harvest" (# 7698) would look fantastic with a "basil" (# 6194) accent wall.

You can also take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & for $5 they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

  2. I would go with a very light mocha or taupe color. It's rich enough to bring in some warmth but still light enough that it's not an over powering color. Plus it would look great with your black entertainment center.

You could also do a light olive color and go with cream and black accents. It's still neutral enough but a bit more lively than the taupe.

    Stem Green or Rosemary Green

  3. Walls:  extremely light yellow

One single wall:  bright dark yellow

Couch: washable fabric (the ones you can clean with a damp sponge)

could be beige tones or mustard colour.

  4. We're in the process of re-doing our kitchen, family room, dining room, foyer and hall.  The dining room and living room are one large room.  The main color in there is going to be Wilmington Tan from Benjamin Moore's historical collection.  In the dining room, we're doing an accent wall in Spicy Nutmeg from Olympic Paint's Biltmore House Collection (it's almost a tobacco color - nice complement to the tan).  The kitchen is going Royal Red, also of the Olympic Paint BHC.  Our living/dining room gets a ton of light so that's why we're going with the medium toned tan.  The floor is a combination of dark, medium and light laminate.  Our ceilings in there are also extremely high (> 20 feet at the peak).

We recently purchased a new sectional from Macy's in a color called Leaf - it's considered a green but it is really more on a nice tan side.  We also have dogs...3 of them.  So far we've had no issues, but we did also purchase the 7 Year Worry No More protection plan just in case.  Right now we have blankets across the seats until our renovation is done.  I bought some nice throws at Marshall's very inexpensively to put on each section once we're done!

You can also get those 1/2 pint "tester" cans of color at Lowe's, Benjamin Moore, and maybe even Home Depot and Sherwin Williams.  You could pick a variety of colors to try - paint a large square of each of the colors along one wall.  Live with it for a few days and then pick your favorite.

    Good luck and HAVE FUN!

  5. I was thinking 3 different color combos, 2 of which aren't exactly 'Natural Tones'....

    1:

    Walls- Red

    Couch- Black

Rug (if you want one)- Black Polka-Dots on White

    2:

    Walls- Bright Yellow

    Couch- Black

    Rug- Light Yellow

    3:

    Walls- Beige

    Couch- Brown

    Rug- White

    Good Luck!!
