I have a neice that has epilepsy and some other severe developmental disorders. She is 5 and is unable to walk on her own. So my sister started her in Equine Therapy-horseback riding with a therapist. I have seen this kind of therapy work wonders for autistic kids, but I was wondering if it would help her as much as others. Anyone have experience with it? Either way, I think it's good to be around nature and outdoors regardless.

  1. My daughter has autism and goes horse riding in a special class for disabled children. All the children have different disabilities and all of them see some benefit from the time they spend with horses, both riding them and being around them. It seems to improve coordination as they use muscles they would not otherwise use, and it improves their balance whilst on the horse. It also has a very calming effect on  most of the children and seems to take their minds off their own disabilities for a while. They also receive one to one attention while they are riding and that is always a positive thing. I would think the equine therapy would only help your niece and if she enjoys it then it is worthwhile.

  2. I have worked with several kids in equine therapy.  Only one of whom was autistic, the rest had severe cognitive impairments.  I have also seen "normal" children participate with their siblings, and think that this therapy would be beneficial for all children.
