  1. I had a dwarf, she was adorable and had quite a personality!

They do sleep a lot though, sometimes for a couple of days. But when awake they can be very quick!

Make sure you have a cage they can't escape from!

Also, don't buy one of those smaller sized exercise balls as my last one broke her leg in one  :(

I think their life expectancy is a little shorter too.

Otherwise, it's mostly like having a normal hamster

  2. I have had dwarf hamsters for quite some time.  The one I have currently doesn't like being handled but was easy to "spoil".  Every time he hears my voice he will come to the side of the cage and wait for treats (which is usually the same food from his food dish)  He does sleep most of the day usually only waking briefly to get a quick bite to eat.  Around 9:00 p.m. he will wake and start running and runs almost all night without much of a break.

They are very easy to care for, their food last a long time, and always entertaining to watch.  They are so small and quick you have to be careful they don't get away from you.  They don't show any fear about jumping off a table to the floor and can get lost very easily.  When this has happened to me I put the cage on the floor close to where they escape and in just minutes they find their way back into their cage.

It is very important as with any other pet to keep their cages clean.  The wheel gets to be the dirtiest part so I clean the wheel more frequently then the cage.

I haven't ever let my hamster's breed so I can't tell you anything about that.
