Anyone have information on trains from Christchurch to Kaikoura?

will we need reservations if traveling right after Christmas or can we just show up at the station? How long is the trip?

You might want to book your travel to be sure. The trip, if you were driving, would be about 2.5 hours. I seem to remember that going by train takes a little longer because they make more stops. It's a great trip though - beautiful scenery.

I don't know about trains but you can get shuttle buses. Call the Tourist Centre in Christchurch for details and to book. I never had a problem hopping on one but don't know at the holidays. it is about a 2-hour drive.
