Question:

Anyone have information regarding what pets are illegal in NY state?

I will be relocating to the greater NYC area next spring, most likely Long Island or Yonkers or White Plains areas. I have a guinea pig, hamster and 2 bearded dragons. I am really needing to find and have been looking online to no avail, a listing of any animals that may be banned or illegal. I can only find ferrets and hedgehogs.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

  1. Hi there... guinea pigs, hamsters and bearded dragons are legal in NYC.

  2. http://www.wnyherp.org/reptile-laws/New-...

Here is a site which lists the reptiles allowed and or illegal.  I think your bearded dragon is OK.  The guinea pig and hamster are both pets and not considered exotics.

As of March 15, 2005 New York State increased the list of banned species that private owners are allowed to possess without special permits. Listed below are the current list of regulated animals.

    Lizards

All venomous species as determined by the DEC

    Asiatic (water) Monitor (Varanus salvator)

    Nile Monitor (Varanus nilocitus)

    White Throat Monitor (Varanus albigularis)

Black Throat Monitor (Varanus albigularis ionides)

    Crocodile Monitor (Varanus salvadori)

    Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodensis)

    Hope this is helpful.
