  1. As for Waikiki, that beach will be way too crowded but anywhere on the south side is good. Avoid the North Shore at all costs.

If you rent a car then find out where surf shops take their students and go out there. You shouldn't have any worries. Since you're new to the sport and moving to Cali in just a few months you should probably do some reading.

Unless you want to get into a fist fight, you need to learn the basics before you ever even get into the water muchless buy a board. Localism is going to be a huge issue.

Also pick up The Way of The Surfer - it's a great book about the community in general.

  2. idk my bff jill

  3. kinda helps to know where you live.......

  4. Waikiki Beach, Honolulu after Sept. when the kids go back to school

  5. My suggestion, is stay away from Waikiki if you can.  I live here on Oahu, and I can give you a 100% promise, that when you come out of that Waikiki water, you'll have a quarter inch thick layer of oil from all the suntan lotions and oils the tourist put on.

But definately rent a board, or buy a decent used one.  And go find yourself a secluded spot on the south side.  You won't run into too many old folks or kiddies there.  It's not as "fancy" as the waikiki strip, but you'll get what you're looking for.  Guaruntee.

    Good luck!

  6. Sunset Beach in California. It's also known as "Gladstones" because the restaurant is right there. All beginners and a great vibe. A slow, forgiving wave that really allows you to practice your chops.

Don't worry about localism in the U.S. It's not the plague it used to be, even in Hawaii because of the stiff penalties the law has started to slam down on these aqua-gangsters. If someone lays a finger on you then report them to the police. They will be fined, possibly jailed and banned from going into the water for up to a year. That's worse than death to most surfers. That's why localism in it's most violent form is on the decline. Nobody has the right to put a finger on you, no matter how many tattoos or "homies" he has around him(punks tend to travel in packs like hyenas. Coincidence?).

Smile at everyone and just have fun.
