a theory by walter P. russel from the university of science and philosophy.....supposedly the moon does not effect the tides. All planets breathe together rhythmically by elongating their equator making the north and south pole closer to gether and then retracting by minimizing the size of the equator making the poles farther apart...supposedly whne the equator is elongated that would cause low tide as the waters recede with the extra room at the equator.....follow?

  1. I follow but I do not concur.

I believe that the gravitational attraction between the moon and the earth, and to a lesser extent, between the sun and the earth causes the tides.

The theory that you cite does not explain the occurrence of spring tides or neap tides.

Walter Russell proposed, during his lifetime, some pretty controversial theories.  Very few, if any, have been verified by well-educated, prominent and respected scientists.

    EDIT:

I agree that we need to keep an open mind.  However, I also feel that, in order to be believable, a theory must fully explain the phenomenon at hand, as well as be supported by factual evidence.

No, the earth was not once flat.  It is true that people thought the earth was flat.  That is the nature of Science.  As technology advances, new evidence comes to light and prompts the revision of previous theories long thought to be true.
