well, their is a new line of cars being produced, i don't know by who, but i do know that it will be a reality by the year 2008, or earlier. basically what d.o.d. stands for is: displacement on demand. it works like this, the engine is compiled of 6 cylinders, when the engine reaches a certain rpm or mp/h it shuts off 1-4 cylinders. so for example, if driving on a highway, cruising at a constant speed of 60mp/h, it will most likely shut off two-three of the cylinders, and keep running at the same rpm.. it will use far less gas than your everyday sports car, though it still has the same look and everything else, it just lacks the loud revving noise that, up-themselve, harley davidson bikers like..., so this will be a great option for those who don't like hybrids 'cause of their look, though the ultimate option would be, yes, a hybrid car!

thanks for reading, if you've heard about this, please inform me of what you know..

thank you!

  1. that was used by cadillac in the 80's (8-6-4)

    it didn't work too well.

dod has been revived by gm and has been used for several years now, mostly in suv's.

  2. There is a lot if one does a google search.  It seems that GM are leading on this development. Basically it allows some cylinders to freewheel at light engine load without input of fuel or compression of air by control of valves and fuel injection.  Good efficiency savings are possible.

  3. Cadillac has been doing this for years.

I understand that there have been some maintenance issues with the system that controls how many cylinders are being used at any one time.

I think that it is a good idea as long as you solve the maintenance issues.

  4. GM has been offering this feature for many years on some models. I had a friend that had a Cadillac with it many years ago.

  5. It's an interesting idea--but there will be electrics out within 5 years that will be cheaper and better. It's always hard to predict these things, but I don't think this technology is going to make much of an impresssion on the market--there's jsust too many simpler ways to improve gas mileage--or get away from using gas entirely.

  6. That been out for years

  7. Cadillac had this years ago and it was a dismal failure.
