My garage door is well balanced and can be hand-open/close smoothly. But when start the chain-drive opener until the chain is engaged, there's abnormal noise and vibration from the drive gear unit, and fail to open the door. What could be the problem?

    --------------------------------------

There is a nylon drive gear in most residential chain-drive units that strips out sooner or later, depending upon how much abuse the opener has encountered.  A sure sign the gear is chewed up is white plastic powder in the bottom of the motor box - visible when the case cover is removed.  (Disclaimer:  Case cover removal should only be done by a professional garage door opener service technician.)

The gear is usually replaceable and any good garage door company should be able to do the job for you fairly quickly.

On a LiftMaster-Chamberlain-Craftsman unit, replacing the gear will usually make the unit run like new.

    Hope that helps!

  2. Many residential garage door openers have plastic drive gears that just don't last.   I doubt you could even find one with all metal gears, and if you could it would probably cost 4x as much.

I can't say exactly what is causing the noise, but it's got to be drive related.

I'd get up there with a ladder.

    Unplug the unit.

    Remove the cover.

    Plug it back in.

Keeping your hands away, have someone activate the button.

See if you can view where it's acting up.

    Call a pro.
