I need to know what this entails, What criteria the British person has to meet, also what the immigrant has to as well. I have looked on various sites but not really helpful.

  1. Dear Grumpy Old Woman,

The Immigration Department have made this illegal because it's not fair on the British citizenry to be used in such a callous way.  The Immigration Department will only allow "true love" marriages and seriously strive to deter marriages to grumpy old women so it looks like you're out of luck.

You might want to try Hollywood, USA.  They actually made two films about grumpy old men so you may have more luck there.

  2. is this marriage only immigrate here??.....you know we're crowded enough as it is...

  3. if you marry a british citizen you automatically gain british status. You do have to fill out forms and stuff, for the passport, tax etc.

  4. I beleive that if the immigrant person is coming here without having a job/work permit then the British partner who is bringing them over needs to prove that they have sufficient financial resources to support them.  The immigrant would not have any recourse to public funds (ie benefits, nhs, social housing) and would not be allowed to work so the British partner would have to prove that their income is sufficient to support two people with no recourse to public funds.

  5. I presume that the American wants to come the UK and marry in the UK. They would need a British fiance visa. She would need to apply for it in the USA (at the UK embassy http://www.britainusa.com/visas/index_vi... ). This will be rather difficult (considering the circumstances of how they met) as they will need to prove that the relationship is genuine and they have met ( http://www.britainusa.com/visas/articles... ).

If they get married she would have to live in the UK for at least 2 years before she would qualify for Indefinate Leave to Remain and then if she can hold that for 1 year she can apply for British citizenship. There is no automatic citizenship via marriage for either UK or USA.

Other things to be considered would be does the UK citizen have enough money to sponsor someone to come to the UK without resorting to public funds (eg if he lived in a council house then the answer would be no). It would be considerably more easier for them to met in the USA and marry there (quickie wedding in Las Vegas) and for them to stay in the USA for awhile before attempting to go to the UK.

As for getting a US visa to stay in the USA I leave that to the Americans. :)
