I'm 19 years old and a full time student and I'm looking for a job and I was thinking about applying at some restuarants..maybe Red Lobster or OutBack..I'd have to drive about 30-40 minutes to them though..would it be worth it in tips?

I'm pretty friendly and cute so I think I could get good tips but I just dunno if it'd be worth it :)!!

  1. I served at Outback for 5 years through college and I made decent money.  Usually on fri./sat. I'd average anywhere between $140. to $200.  (sometimes more, sometimes less).  I made a lot of great friends and met a lot of cool people too.  One word of caution, Outback is very much a "corporate" atmosphere, they will work you like a dog as as far as running everyone else's food, doing running sidework during the shift and cleaning your section and end of the night sidework.  If you can possibly find an indepentdently owned NICE restaurant you may want to check that out.  There the bussers will usually do more of the "dirty" work for you, although you will have to tip out a little more.  They also may require a little more experience than Outback.  Just my two cents but if I were you I'd stay away from Red Lobster.  The quality of customer isn't quite as high (at least around here).

  2. If you really need the money... go for it.

  3. It depends where you live... If you live in a smaller cities some of the restaurants are kind of nasty.  But if you really need the money then go ahead.

  4. I used to waitress before I started bartending. Its definitly worth the $$, I can't even explain to you how fantastic the tips were I don't think I'll have that kind of disposable income again for a long, long time. (Although I was living at home with little expenses during this time, which also helps).

Anyways, I say don't apply at one of those restaurants, go somewhere higher end.  If there is a higher end steak-house then definitly go for that one. Somewhere where people will spend good money on booze and have a higher plate average. Otherwise you'll be working really hard for not as much money.

That being said, I'm sure Red Lobster and Outback both will still be pretty good tips, could be worth the drive at least! Also it's so much fun working in that industry.

Lastly: are you of age where you live? If you are, bartending is better money!

  5. WELL WORKING AT RED LOBSTER ISN'T THE TYPE OF RESTAURANT YOUR LOOKS WILL  MATTER AT .THATS FAST PACED AND VERY FAMILY ORIENTED AND IT TAKES COMPLETE HARD WORK, AND THE ONLY TIPS WILL BE FOR YOUR GOOD SERVICE BUT THEY ARE BUSY THERE SO YOU COULD MAKE MONEY IF YOU WANT SOMETHING BASED ON APPEARANCE AND PERSONALITY TRY A TRUCKSTOP AND I'M NOT CRITICIZING YOU .YOU COULD MAKE ALOT OF MONEY AND YOUR NOT REAL EXPERIENCED  THERE COULD BE GOOD MONEY WAITRESSING BUT ITS HARD WORK

  6. pick a good upper scale steak or seafood restaurant, for good tips.

my daughter put herself through college by waitressing.

  7. F&B outlets are a good place to start work

    there are the long hours

but once u get used to it...

there is nothing much to look forward to in life...

    it will be a blast ! :o)

  8. I've waitressed for 20 years. It is HARD work, but worth it. Its ALL ACTING. No matter how bad your day is, you have to be nice. I average about $60-90 a day (not counting paycheck, which isn't S**t). That is for lunch shift, 11-3, which I prefer. You make way more at night.

DO NOT go to a corporation. Find a "fine dining" steakhouse. Work for a PERSON not a company.

btw, cute has nothing to do with it. It takes a certain personality. I say GO FOR IT.

  9. You can be cute all d**n day, but if you can't handle the public, it may not be worth it.

If you can, you will do great on tips.

It's not an easy job, so please don't assume that because you're "cute",that you can hack it.

Good luck at whatever you do!

  10. IT is fantastic money in a short amount of time...A good server can make 100 bucks easy in a 5 hour shift.  You can make more when you learn to flirt and be outgoing with your tables and upsell your ticket total.  Restaurants also are great about working around a school schedule and it can be a cool place to meet people as well from all walks of the world.  Just be careful because believe me the people who work there will see you as their new hook up girl if you take advantage too much of the scenery!!!!  But I recommend highly just also be aware that managers usually shy away from people who have not served before as it is very tough when you first start out.  People can be a******s and it is a lot to remember!!!!!!
