Anyone here an equine veterinary technician or just a technician in general?

im just curious if you go through the same course type as a normal program? and what all is involved? when you are in the program do they teach you various animals including exotic and equine or large animals?

how soon did you get hired out of school? what is the salary like?

  1. All the certified techs I have talked to say that, while courses vary depending on the school, there are electives for large animal classes.

    But the big things are much like small animal practice.  Reading CBC's, Urines, and Stools.  Anesthesia, though you use different drugs on horses, works off the same principles.

    There is a lot of "on the job training" - or re-training (sometimes school doesn't teach the most practical approach.)

    As for wages - it should start out between 12-15 dollars depending on the clinic.  If you have experience, you can obviously ask for more.  The only problem is, when we would put an add for a new tech, there would be 10-15 applicants.
