  1. I was a waitress for 3 days.  It wasn't hard work by any means, but there's just too much "having to be nice to people" for my tastes.  I much prefer office work, where I don't have to deal with people.

  2. Yes, it is difficult and probably a lot harder than you would expect. Here is a run-down of responsibilities as a server:

    1. Handling your tables - this includes getting the order, ringing it in, bringing drinks, keeping up with refills, bringing the food, bringing sides and special requests (extra napkins, condiments, etc.), casing out your tables....and doing this for many tables at a time!

    2. Handling your money - you are responsible for taking care of all your tables' bills and handing them in at the end of the night. The amount left over is yours for your nightly tip.

    3. Doing running sidework at the same time as taking care of your tables. This is included but not limited to running food, getting ice, bringing out dishes, filling condiments, bussing tables, etc.

    4. Opening / Closing work, i.e. setting up the restaurant in the morning and cleaning it up and closing at night.

You would be surprised at all the work that goes into being a server, but sometimes you can find places where the money is worth it. I had a couple of bartending jobs where I made about $200 a shift.

  3. no

  4. Good things is that you develop better communication skills, problem solving skills, time management skills.

  5. I have worked at Steakhouses for four years as a server.

The good thing for me was that it helped me to become a lot less shy and more personable.

It is not hard at all.  Once you get used to how your restaurant does things it will become second nature.

The only bad part is learning to deal with the difficult customers and not take it personally.  Some people come in and complain about everything, not because it is bad but because management will give them their dinners for free if they complain enough.  There are some scammers.  Also, some people are very, very rude and they know you can't say anything back to them (at least if you want your job) so you have to learn that it's not personal and just say "Ok, let me gt the manager" and most of the time they say "no, nevermind."

because they know they are being jerks.

I'm not trying to scare you.  98% of customers are great and you can make A LOT of money if you work at a nice restaurant.

    Go for it!
