  1. lol..um a vegan caterer?? haha. wrong section.

  2. It would help if you have some education relevant to operating and running a small business, and you do need to have some culinary skill and be very familiar with culinary concepts. You have to have certifications and licenses from the government to to own and operate a food service business. You also need to be very clean and be routinely inspected and book keep and be tight with receipts and spending and stay on top of everything paper-trail wise. The last thing you want is an audit because you just didn't know how to run the books in the business.

Caterers really make a wide range of money depending on where they work, how much prestige they have, etc. I'd say that entering the business you'd probably lose money for a few years, you'll basically invest in it extensively to get your name "out there", buy all the supplies you need, maybe rent a central location that can be the office or showcase area.

Most businesses start with initial losses because the up front expenses, loans and lack of a customer base. After you establish yourself you'll probably make money in direct proportion to how good you are, how ritzy of a clientele you are serving, etc.

BTW if you do want to serve upper-crust people and cater more expensive meals, you should put yourself through culinary school because down-home style cooking just won't cut it unfortunately. Best of luck and hope you are successful in your endevours.

  3. you will probably need to go to a culinary institute or school, its short only a couple months.  If you run your own catering there is good money if you just serve food you better start looking for part time jobs.

  4. I would ask this in the career section.

  5. I've been the head chef at one restaraunt and help run one now.  I never went to culinary school but love cooking. you don't need a dagree to get their but what you can learn in school will take you years to teach yourself.  as with any profession. some people make money some don't. those who work hard and put in the effort normally have a successful business.  caterers can make a ton of money.  if you have the dream and think you have the talent go for it. doing what you love always show.  finances will always cause stress.  don't sacrifice what you love for fear of not having money.  if you go into it strong, the money will follow.  the education will give you confidence though, which sometimes makes all the difference
