It depends on the situation but its only viable on a south facing roof. Its usually fairly marginal whether it will pay for itself in a reasonable time span. Of more use may be solar panels directly contributing to the hot water system within the home or, if suitable, Ground source heat pumps may be a more effective system to look at.

Whatever you choose it may be possible to obtain a grant for one project from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme.
