  1. I would determine how the student learns best, e.g.:

Some are more oral than others

    Others are more hands on

    Still others are visual learners

Once this is established, I would gear the type of learning to how he learns best so he will more naturally stay on task

  2. I am assuming this is for a student that has trouble with staying on task.  You can set a timer for 5, 10, 15 minutes depending on the age of the student.  Every time the student is on task for the entire time he or she earns points towards a reward.  When I taught elementary school, my students worked to earn up to 30 minutes of a special activity every Friday.  I always had the one student who really struggled and used the timer.  He or she earned points for the whole class when they worked for the entire time.  This had the whole class trying to help him earn those extra minutes.

  3. Make the enviornment conducive to concentrating - remove distractions.

Walk around the room and reward on-task behavior.

Use a self-monitoring system - at a pre-arranged signal every few minutes, students check off on a card if they were on-task or not.
