Anyone install carpet tiles over existing wall-to-wall carpet?

Ok...thanks to all who answered...you've convinced me not to try to do that. My next question is--everyone is talking about carpet tiles that are adhered to the floor with tape but I am looking at tiles that say they don't need to be taped or glued...they use the wall to stay secure. Anyone have experience with these?

  1. Thank you, even though I didn't read the previous Q, for assuming that install would not work.

While I have no clue how a wall equates to HOLDING carpet tile, I do suggest a few things.

I want to assume that the "TILE" is a quality product, durable, and may be thought of in a long term sense.

I ask you to assume this: No matter the length of time you intend. Carpet tape is likely as stable and durable as the adhesive on the back of peel and stick vinyl tile.

I'd suggest an extremely clean, smooth substrate, then an application of a water based contact cement. I use DuPont, and in a nice shade of aqua. The consistency of water, with not such a foul/toxic odor, rapid dry time, equal adhesion properties to lacquer based contact, and water cleanup initially.

Apply is small sections, much as one might with ceramic tile, to both the substrate and back of the carpet squares, allow dry/set time, and apply the tile, PRECISELY, then move on.

    just my two "sense"

  2. can not and really should not be done you need to adheare to something and there really is nothing secure enough for it.
