  5. It would be impossible to give a complete history of any country here, but here is a very brief outline of Irish history:

5th Century : St Patrick brought christianity to Ireland

9th Century : The Vikings first arrived in Ireland

1000 : Brian Boru became High King of Ireland

    1200 : The English arrived

1798 : The United Irishmen stage a rebellion against the British

1829: The Catholic Emancipation Act increased the rights of Catholics who faced severe discrimination under British rule

1840-1845: Irish Potato famine resulted in 1million dead and 1 million emigrating

1916: The Easter Rising took place

1922: The Irish Free State is declared and the Irish Civil War broke out

    1949: Irish Republic is declared

    1957: Ireland joins the UN

1997: Divorce becomes legal in Ireland (yes, 1997!!)

Ireland has a population of around 6million, with 4million living in the republic. There are in total 32 counties, with 6 of them being part of the UK. The most important cities on the island are Dublin, Belfast, Galway, Cork,  and Limerick.

Irish people enjoy a very high standard of living and Dublin is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in.

    Hope this helps :)
