  1. Get him to buy a really good guide book to Germany.  A Bamberg speciality is "smoked" beer.

  2. Nice website to check out

    http://www.bamberg.army.mil/sites/local/

  3. Bamberg is a nice little city in Bavaria, with a lovely historical centre. Highlights are...Old Town Hall, Klein Venedig, Neue Residenz, Rosengarten, Cathedral. I was there last year, but only on a day trip from Würzburg. There are many small cities not far from Bamberg, and I would recommend they explore as many as they can.

There is so much history to see (Old castles & fortresses, churches, museums, artwork, statues etc ) and lovely scenery all throughout Germany.

Places I would suggest to see, besides Bamberg...

    Würzburg...The Residenz, Marienberg Fortress, Neumünster.

Coburg...Veste Coburg (Fortress), Old Town Square.

Rothenberg Ob Der Tauber...a 12th century, walled city.

    Nuremburg, etc.

Train travel is a good way to get around, unless they would prefer to drive. (A railpass of some sort would be more cost effective than single train tickets).

I recommend that they get a good travel book such as "Lonely Planet-Munich & Bavaria", which will give them plenty of ideas, information, maps and priceguides etc.

  4. Bamberg there is alot to do and to see, in the summertime there is a castle that overlooks the whole city and there is a place to eat in the castle too. Pretty much in  Europe they can have the  time of their life basically. Take from me I am stationed in Germany now and to tell you truth I would not trade it for anything. It pretty much depends on what they like to do.

  5. Bamberg is a beautiful small town in Southern Germany called Bavaria...

  6. if you have any specific questions like clubs sightseeing...and stuff email me. i was born and raised in bamberg..i was there for 18 years...

  7. some Local stuff -- definately the Bamberg Rathaus (check the profile of the building for the 3D cherub leg that "comes out of" the fresco!) and downtown shopping district (especially this time of year!).  There's an AWESOME crepe cart in the downtown "Fussgaengerzone" (pedestrian zone), the "crepe lady" is an area celebrity and a definate must-do!)...  and the Nepomuk Restaraunt is in the book "1001 Things to Do before you Die"  (great book!) but the restaraunt is expensive and hard to get reservations, so save for a special day.

If they get homesick, there's a great new Mongolian BBQ out by Obi in the Hafen area.  and a great English speaking pizza delivery (off-post) is Joey's (# 0951-5099950)

i have kids in both bamberg ES and HS and my kids used to go to german school... the US schools are excellent!

contact me for more good stuff!
