Anyone know about California Teacher Retirement?

Just wondering if the teacher retirement in California is supposed to be pretty good? I am talking about the mandatory retirement deduction we have taken out of our paychecks each month....Is it pretty good? Seriously clueless about it and I have been teaching in the public school system for about 7 years. Time for me to get educated about my retirement? Any input is appreciated.

  1. No. My wife has it and the choices are very limited and not great.  It is the only thing she can do at work for her retirement. It is better than nothing because it will grow tax deferred.

  2. Your referring to STRS? I've been told no. I have been advised by my colleagues at school to open a 403b or a tax shelter too. That STRS won't be enough for me when I eventually retire. So I opted for the 403B. Perhaps you can ask the veteran teachers at your school for advice.
