Question:

Anyone know all about rugby teams...or rugby in general?

I was wondering are rugby teams privately owned like football clubs are. I mean the likes of the teams that take part in the heineken cup or England's Guinness Premiership. I only watch rugby when Ireland, Leinster or Munster are playing, not a huge fan of the sport so that's why I'm asking.

when you look up a football team on wikipedia it gives the chairman (which I assume is the same as owner, or there abouts), but when you look up any of those rugby teams (most Irish and English) it doesn't give a chairman. who owns them?

thanks.

  1. leeds metropolitan university own leeds carnegie, but thats all i really know about owners (and thats only because my brother goes to leeds met)

but other teams there are leicester tigers (my fave)

london wasps (i hate with a passion)

    london irish

    gloucestershire

newcastle falcons (i know someone who plays for them)

    and obviously many more

    try checking out http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_un...

its always good for whats going on in the world of rugby union

the major competitions are the guiness premiership which is like a leagure but isnt won by the person who is at the top of the league, at the end of the season the top teams play in a knock out to see who claims the title,

EDF energy cup can be compared to the FA cup in football,

the heineken cup is the european competition for clubs,

the 6 nations is the european competition for nations with the 6 antions involved being england, wales, scotland, ireland, france and italy

the tri nations is similar but is for the south and is between the australia, new zealand, and south africa

the world cup is held every 4 years and is normally open to any country but so many are entering at the moment they are going to have clamp down on people

and every 4 years there is the lions tour, this is when a team is created out of players from ireland, wales, scotland and england are put together to create the "ultimate" squad. Last time they played in new zealand and lost terribly 3/3 games

the time before they went to south africa and won 2/3 games which was quite impressive

and if ur wondering about rugby league, well thats just glourified touch rugby, haha

    Saracens           Chairman                              Mark Sinderberry

    Worcester         Chairman                                 Cecil Duckworth

the majority of clubs are self owned with elected or appointed Chairmen or CEO's

Sale were salvaged in 2000 by buisnessman Brian Kennedy

  3. There are very few if any that are "Privately" owned, though that is hard to understand for the novice....and certainly difficult to accept for the members and chairman of the IRB

  4. it all depends on the team

league teams are usually like there football equivlant and have chairman some union teams have the same others still have the shamatuer status when owned by the club and run via a board of past players or local buisness men

not suprised you don't get over excited about union

try watching sky from next weekend when super league returns

or setanta when the nrl returns on there and you will see there are two different games with the name rugby

i know which i prefer but will leave it upto you to make your on mind up

  5. It really dependes on the country. For instance in Ireland, the teams are funded by the IRFU. Teams in France however are privately owned for example Clermont Auvernge who are owned by Michelin. That's why Irish teams have less money to splash about like our English and French cousins. (And we still made it out of the Group of Death)
