I'm looking for facts that will shock and surprise my co-workers into acting a little more environmentally responsibly around the office - facts like switching off a computer over night saves enough energy to power a light bulb for a day...

  1. Every time someone sends a joke email, 40 000 trees are cut down to power the sending and receiving computers.

If everybody in the building just brought laptops and worked outside, you would save enough energy to power Wisconsin for two years.

Drinking your own urine instead of coffee from the machine saves enough energy to power the medical equipment you'll need later.

Not lifting your feet while you walk creates enough electricity to power everybody's computers by static power.

If everybody worked without monitors, and communicated telepathically with their computers, they would save enough electricity to make 5 hamburgers at McDonalds for every monitor lost.

If you combined numbers 4 and 5 there would be 18 hamburgers for every monitor lost.

  2. If everyone stopped photocopying there backsides on the xerox machines. You would be able to provide enough energy to stage the oscar award ceremony every year!

  3. Will add some more about office later so watch this space but here is one

In the UK we throw away the equivalent of 3.5 million double decker buses each year, that will stretch from here to Australia

  4. If everyone p1ssed in a pot and poured it down the drain instead of flushing down the toilet you would save enough water to fill my olympic size swimming pool ...f@ck knows how many times

  5. In the time it has taken to read this answer seven new-age hippies have chained themselves to a 400 year old giant sequoia and the lumberjack's chainsaw has just hit the major artery of three of them in three...two...one.

    "Piece, man"

  6. A heavy coat of dust on a light bulb can block up to half of the light.

A hot water faucet that leaks one drop per second can add up to 165 gallons a month. That's more than one person uses in two weeks.

When you turn on an incandescent light bulb, only 10 percent of the electricity used is turned into light. The other 90 percent is wasted as heat.

A compact fluorescent light bulb uses 75 percent less energy than a regular bulb – and it can last up to four years.

A crack as small as 1/16th of an inch around a window frame can let in as much cold air as leaving the window open three inches!

Leaving lights on in an empty office overnight wastes enough to make about 100 cups of coffee!

If you turn off the photocopier at work when you leave - the energy you save overnight can make about 1600 copies.

"For every kilowatt hour of energy used almost one kilogram of coal is burned."

    * Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours -- or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline.

    * 350,000 aluminum cans are produced every minute!

    * More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product

.* Once an aluminum can is recycled, it can be part of a new can within six weeks.

    * Because so many of them are recycled, aluminum cans account for less than 1% of the total U.S. waste stream, according to EPA estimates.

    * During the time it takes you to read this sentence, 50,000 12-ounce aluminum cans are made.

    * An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now!

    * There is no limit to the amount of times an aluminum can can be recycled.

    * Aluminum can manufacturers have been making cans lighter -- in 1972 each pound of aluminum produced 22 cans; today it yields 29 cans.

    * We use over 80,000,000,000 aluminum pop cans every year.

    * At one time, aluminum was more valuable than gold!

    * A 60-watt light bulb can be run for over a day on the amount of energy saved by recycling 1 pound of steel. In one year in the United States, the recycling of steel saves enough energy to heat and light 18,000,000 homes!

    * Every ton of recycled steel saves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,000 of coal, and 40 pounds of limestone.

Ted Kennedy has called Nantucket Sound near his Massachusetts estate “a national treasure” — but that didn’t stop the senator from having oil dumped from his yacht into its waters.

A local photographer spotted an oil slick coming from Kennedy’s yacht Mya as Kennedy and his guests left the vessel in a launch following a race that ended in Hyannis, the Cape Cod Today newspaper reported.

The lensman was so shocked that he rowed his dinghy out to question the crew member left aboard the yacht.

He asked the crewman, “What the h**l are you doing?”

The crewman said that diesel fuel had gotten into the bilge and he was told to dump it.

When the photographer pointed out that the yacht was moored in coastal waters near shellfish beds and people swimming, the crewman replied, “Whatever.”

Cape Cod Today published a photo showing the oil slick emanating from Mya.

As Newsmax reported earlier, Kennedy has opposed a proposal to construct a wind farm in Nantucket Sound to produce cheap, clean energy. Asked why, he said: “That’s where I sail.”
