  1. "Hot potatos" (catch and pass/set the ball, which would help avoid hurting their fingers).

Each player can serve (throw the ball over) up to two times but the second one has to be earned. Player rotate at side-out, with extra players rotate in and the one going to serve rotate out.

You want to find them some soft volleyballs (such as USYVL volleyball) becuase their fingers are not strong enough to set regular ball yet. You should allow them to catch or carry the ball.

You want to set the net lower so that front row players get more chance of "spiking" the ball. USYVL uses the Park & Sun Sports net set on the grass, which has nine different hights.

  2. Queens of the court is always a fun way to start plus it gets them communicating

How about this game I made up... well its not really a game but at each practice pick a coach for the day...this player will help you do drills and give examples it'll get everyone motivated if you say whoever does good and works hard at this practice will be coach next practice.

My coach had a game where we would be split up into 2 groups and everyone was given one job and in order to get three hits (which is important to stress while they're young) Give every player a number and Let say yoiu have 12 girls 6 to a side....give them all random numbers from 1-6 so when a serve comes over the server will yell a random number from 1-6 and that player has to get it and call out another number from 1-6 I'm sure you get it..it works on communications and is also fun because it can be hard to do.

Do some games with consequences for the losing team or ifd you do a schriumage against you say for every point they beat you by you'll do a push up or a lap...it makes them really want it and work harder. Hope I helped <3 Che Che

  4. We are doing several things in the group lessons that I am working right now.

We teach them the correct arm and hand positions for passing.  We have two lines.  One tosses the ball.  The other moves to pass the ball.  However, we start with them catching the ball with their arms extended like they were going to pass.  After several rounds, we switch to have them cushion the ball with their forearms.  The ball should only go about 1 foot or 2 feet above their arms.  If it goes further, it is too much swing.

For serving, we teach them the overhand serve.  We start at the 10 foot line so there is some success.  (And the net is lower for that age group.  It is 6'6")

We started with the overhand passing (setting) with two lines.  One line was next to the other.  We started with the players that were doing the setting had to sit down and the other player standing over them and dropping the ball into their hands.  We teach the correct hand position.  We have them catch the first 20.  They switch positions.

The next part of the drill has them kneeling.  And then finally standing.

We taught them teamwork tonight.  We had 3 players across the court with the coach tossing.  I tossed 9 balls of varying difficulty.  The moved to catch the ball with arms extended, just like they were going to pass.  If the ball hit the floor, we got the next 3 players in line.  They had to call mine or the name of the person that was going to play it.  I started with easy tosses that were easy for them to play.  I them made them move.  I then tossed the ball between them.  I tried to keep the players off the back of the court involved by counting to 9 and yelling out the name of the player that was going to play the ball.

We use the VolleyLite available from various ball manufacturers.  However, you can make your own for the younger players.  Use the following link
