  1. michelangliron is correct when saying it is not true bamboo.  It it called Lucky Bamboo

    "Lucky Bamboo Plants (Dracaena sanderiana)

Lucky bamboo has been used by the Chinese for centuries in the art of feng shui to create harmony in their surroundings. As it turns out, lucky bamboo plants aren't from the bamboo family at all but the Dracaena family."

    Care Tips

Keep water fresh by changing it every week, and always keep water levels at approximately an inch from the base of the canes. Lucky Bamboo prefers plenty of indirect sunlight and room temperatures at 65-70o. Although opinions differ on feeding, your Lucky Bamboo is a living organism, so it makes sense to occasionally add a mild solution to the water such as African Violet fertilizer. Since growth can be controlled by feeding, small amounts of fertilizer will keep the plant at a manageable size.

Just a note about the water although it does not say in the care tips use distilled water or tapwater that has set for at least 24 hours.  Most tap water has too many chemicals for the plant.  Unless of course you have well water.

  2. No dirt. You'll choke the roots that suck up the water to thrive - so yes, you'll kill them if you put them in dirt. Totally in water.

  3. Known for centuries as Lucky Bamboo, the plant is not a bamboo at all (botanical name: Dracaena) but a resilient member of the lily family that grows in the dark, tropical rain-forests of Southeast Asia and Africa.

I do have mine in soil because our tap water isn't the best for plants They grow just as well in the soil as in the water.

Here is my favorite site for bamboo, it has all the information you will need.

Meanings of lucky bamboo, you have five.

    3 stalks = attracts happiness

    5 stalks = attracts wealth

7 stalks = result in good health

    21 stalks = offer a very powerful all-purpose blessing

  4. They live in tropical places so if it's sunny leave it outside with lots of water and of course dirt. But if there if not sun but a bright lamp beside it.

  5. Any plant does better in soil.  The root system formed when a plant is in water is much more delicate than the roots it forms when grown in soil.  Rooting something in water is OK but to keep it in water means that the plant is not reaching its potential

  6. They are called bamboo but they are not related to bamboos at all, except that they look a bit like them. They are members of the Dracaena family. In nature they live on the shady floors of hot wet jungles in West Africa so they should have no trouble adapting to soil.
