Anyone know anything about central heat/air units?

My central heat/air unit is freezing up on the outside and so it's not blowing cold air in the house. Does it need coolant or is there something major wrong? We just replaced the motor/blower about 6 months ago but we've lived here for 3 years and never had any coolant put in. Thanks!!

  1. Just a few things to add to MUSTANGES answer;

    Make sure you pull the fuse to the unit(usually located right next to the outside unit itself) This will cut all power to the unit while your cleaning it. Be very careful and don't spray any electrical connections directly.

    Don't hit or use high pressure water on the coils or you may end up bending the aluminum fins.... They bend very easily and that can impede airflow if bent.

    If after you have completed the cleaning and the unit still freezes up then it's time to call the pro so they can check the freon level.

  2. It could need refrigerant but the most likely reason is due to airflow.ie.dirty coil or filter.When it freezes you can thaw it in 30 minutes by turning your fan to "on"and your "cool" to off.Then check the cleanliness of the coil and filter.

    You will also start getting some cooling when you thaw it out until it freezes again if the problem is not corrected.Good luck.

  3. Shelly: Turn the air conditioner OFF, Let it defrost itself completely. If it's frosting/icing etc,  you don't need freon. Make sure the blower fan  is running, it's possible that you have a printed circuit board with a relay problem. not opening or closing. If you or anyone else in the home is not a do it yourselfer, it's best you call for service. After 2-3 hrs, turn the AC back on, set thermostat to *80 and let it run. It's possible you are trying to cool the house down to low. Most AC's are designed to lower only 20-22 degrees below outside temp.

  4. That blower motor could be the cause if it's not working properly.

    The other answers are possibilities also.

    Since it was changed out recently maybe it was not the correct one.
