My son (16) wants to do this. He is smart enough to not have a hands on teacher, but, is the diploma really real? He wants to do this to start college early. Any info would help.

  1. Just this week we were accepted into K12.  They are in many different states and are a virtual public school.  (like a charter school).  They are free and your son will get his books and computer mailed to him.  So far what I have seen I like, and my son is a lot less stressed about doing the work than when he went to a conventional school building.  I was told the diplomas are the same as any other public school system.

Also, I have heard of some colleges letting kids take classes when they are younger.  Google it for your area or call the schools.

I did note that our local public school was not excited about the 'virtual' school.  Suspecting it is a matter of following the money...

  2. I am currently enrolled at Penn Foster High School. I do my courses and exams through the internets website. I am doing it for the same reason to get a head start in college. The diploma is real. Its the same thing as any other diploma that you would receive at a public school. You do your work at your own pace and time. You can visit their website at pennfoster.com

Its an excellent program. I needed two more years of high school but I will be able to finish in a couple of more months. Its a very good choice for your son to be able to study on his own and this is one of the best homeschooling programs offered over the internet. They send you your materials and books and all you do is report your exams and you could finish fast as longest you are willing to do it. I really hope I helped and gave you the information you needed ;)

  3. I'm in 10th grade, and do an online school, Alpha Omega Academy.

They let you work at your own pace, so he very well could do two years in one, and graduate early.

    AOA gives diplomas, too.

They send you the software for you to do school right from your computer.

I can normally to 2 - 3 days worth of work in 3 - 4 hours.  It all depends on your attention span, and drive to get things done.

    Good luck!

  4. Im going to be homeschooled here in the next few days. I know it takes a while for them to get your information and everything. Im going thru trecca so you may want to check there website www.trecca.com. Good luck.

  5. yes you still get a diploma

My son finished the 8th grade in public school with straight F's and went from that to straight A's and B's being home schooled. Online charter schools are considered the same as public schooling. My son graduated an online charter school and now attends University of Dayton ( a private university ) with scholarships.

Home schooling can work for some. The student needs to be self disciplined enough to do the work and care. Generally less work is involved with an online charter school than in a regular public school. You are also able to work at your own pace. k12 will customize your curriculum and make sure you are where you need to be.

This is the school my other children are now attending,

Depending on where you live they may be a help, if not, there are online charter schools all over.

They will provide you with the computer, printer, supplies and books that you need as well as teachers and academic advisors. This is the same as a public school but ONLINE at home. They will also provide you with teacher to help you by phone and email. They will also help you with any state required testing that needs to be done as well as proficiencies.

If you choose not to use a virtual school , yes you can still purchase k12 products. http://v7.k12.com/independence.html........

  6. My daughter is a 9th grader, homeschooling through California Virtual Academy, an online public high school. She really likes it. CAVA students follow the state public school requirements for graduation and earn a CA public high school diploma upon graduation. Many states have these "virtual schools" or online charter schools. Here are two national ones:

If you happen to be in California, you do not need to complete four years of high school before starting college. Many homeschooled teens (and some schooled teens who want to leave early) take the California High School Proficiency Exam and receive the legal equivalent of a high school diploma. Some then start at Community College, and transfer to a four-year university as a Junior, at the age some of their peers are entering as freshman. I don't know about this option in other states. I suggest you contact your state Homeschool Association.
