most effective way to conseve is to protect the species  in its natural habitat. to do this, control hunting/poaching, set up nature reserves, and reduce pollution & habitat loss. endanderged species include tigers, gorillas, elephants, etc. there are 5000 wild marsh crocs in sri lanka and india, hunted for skin but poaching now outlawed, people dont want to reintroduce them because theyre dangerous maybe. mediterranean monk seals, less than 500 left on earth, killed deliberatlely by selfish idiotic fishers who dont want competition for fish, became endandered because humans made them shy so they hide in caves so hard to find mate. elephants hunted by poachers who want ivory. in  north america, bobcats hunted for fur until 1983. whales were hunted extensively in 18th to 20th centuries. in usa, ddt, an insectiside, worked way up food chain and built up fat tissues in peregrine falcon's eggs, so thin eggshel so they broke, so no babies and so numbers dropped; ddt banned in 1972. quagga is extinct relative of zebra, like zebra but no strips on rump and brown coats, hunted in 19th century and last one died in zoo in 1883, species remade by selective breeding.

if its a dire case, breed the animal in captivity, then set it wild when numbers rise. animals that were bred in captivity include... giant panda, which starved because it only ate bamboo, and it breeds poorly in captivity but its getting better because more zoos are loaing pandas to other zoos for breeding, which means more genes getting around; arabian oryx, similar to antelope, which was hunted almost to extinction by 1960s, bred successfully in phoenix zoo in usa, reintroduced successly into its natureal desert habitat in oman; komodo dragon of indonesia, komodo national park was created in 1980.
