  1. Were they in Ohio before the war, or after it?

If you asked yourself "Which war?", you got my point. There have been white people in Ohio since 1788, and red ones for 6,000+ years before then. The Gillinghams may have been Indians. Probably not, but a date or two would help.

I found this couple, which looks like yours, unless your Charles married Frances when he mustered out of the 87th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1866. They were hiding in Maine.

Click on "Advanced Search" to use some of the fields besides name.

    CHARLES GILLINGHAM

    b. 05 Jan 1920

    d. Jan 1983

    LR 04073 (Sanford, York, ME)

    SSN issued Ohio

    FRANCES S GILLINGHAM

    b. 08 Aug 1921

    d. 15 Apr 1998

    LR 04073 (Sanford, York, ME)

    SSN Issued Ohio

    Note:

    The names match.

She was a year and a half younger than he, a VERY common pattern

She outived him, another VERY common pattern

    Both SSNs issued in Ohio

Both died in the same small town in Maine

I'd bet 10:1 these are yours. I might lose. More research needed.

If you caught a trophy bass with every cast, the "lure" of bass fishing would fade. If you got your relatives "dead on" with every search, genealogy would not be as much fun.
