Ok, well i know quite a lot about my dad's ancestry. My mum however, one of her grandfather's was an earl and lived in a castle. She doesn't have a lot of family left now though. I'm quite intrigued to find out where my mum gets her dark hair from. She thought that there maybe some spanish/latin somewhere down her side of the family. Is there any way i can find out about my family tree? Would i have to pay for it? Not interested in those silly internet scams but a genuine site, if one exists? Preferably a free website anyone know of?

  1. You might be able to find your grandfather the Earl on

    http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/f...

    or

    http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.c...

  2. If they are not senile and remember you can look up the records when they came off the giant boats.

Find out where they cane from and dates and where they landed.

If this doesn't work try the Mormons they have a large record if immigrants.

  3. www.ansectory.com

there is a 14 day free trail on there. my mam has just started looking at our family tree and it was a bit of a shock to find Jamacan desendants when i'm probaly as pale as you can get.

  4. can't you search surname origins

  5. Sounds intriguing. Try www.freebmd.co.uk As the title suggests it is completely free and you can do searches for anywhere in the UK. They also have a sister site www.freecen.co.uk where you can search census up to 1891 for most of Britain. www.findmypast.co.uk offers 1881 census for free. Also, try signing up to genesreunited. But I'll warn you now, it gets addictive!!!! Happy hunting and good luck.

  6. It all depends which country you are in as to the sites to look for.

If you were in the UK, there are quite a few sites to choose.

GENUKI is one of the better known ones.

    Genes Reunited is another

Or do a search for a particular area

    name + genealogy

    HTH

  7. Ancestry.com. I believe that there is a small fee for registering on this site but it also contains many pointers to other sources.

    Best wishes.
