I recently purchased an rear bike rack, but it didn't come with instructions and i figured out how to attach it, but i have a lot of extra pieces like two bars, a couple of clamps and a bunch of screws...please help!!! also, i looked on line and found something close but it still doesn't help...and if i do attach it, is it ok for it to be moving?

  1. Firstly, the rack should not move, if it does it can damage the bike and may even cause you to fall off.  The rack should be firmly bolted to the bike in four places, two on the seat stay and two on the drop outs.

Some questions, does your bike frame have the fittings for attaching the rack?  There should be holes drilled in the drop outs (where the rear wheel attaches)  and drilled lugs on the seat stays.  If it does, were there bolts in the holes which you have used?

I think the rack you have bought comes with a universal mounting kit.  The clamps are for attaching to frames with no drilled mounts and the spare bolts go with these.  Without seeing them my guess is the two bars are extenders to use with disc brakes.  If you don't have disc brakes you won't need them.

EDIT - You could certainly try using the same holes the fender is bolted too.  As long as there is room and the two don't rub together it shouldn't be a problem.

Can you return your current rack for a refund?  Another option is a seat post rack which will be much easier to fit.

It won't carry quite as much weight as a full rack but should carry 20lb.

Final option is, as you say, to ask at the bike shop.
