I'm going surfing on saturday for my friend's birthday. I bought this board at costco for $100, its foam and its 8 feet long. I know how to surf. Like you just get the wave that pushes you then you try to stand up but I only did it one other time. I need tips on balance and all that. Thx

  1. Yikes. A Costco board, I agree. First off, before you even get into the water, get online or buy a learn to surf video. Your number one hands-down most important thing is to learn surf etiquette. The learning curve is going to be very high, so be forewarned, but at least if you understand surf etiquette, and you stay out of people's ways, then you will end up making a lot less people angry! Where do you live? I live in NY, and as the season progresses (esp now with hurricane season) the waves will continue to get bigger. There will still be smaller days here and there, but if you're going to do it, get out there now.  Find your local break and pick a spot to paddle out that is further away from all the crowds. You'll be glad you did and so will they! Practice paddling into the waves in the whitewater, it is smaller and should be easier for you to get up on.  My advice is just practice! Get your butt in the water, that's the only way your comfort level will go up and you will feel more balanced on the board. The longer board will definitely help you though with popping up because it's just a bigger area to work with. Paddle like h**l, and when you feel the wave kind of "lift" you. Pop up to your feet as quickly as you can, almost like doing a pushup. Practice pop-ups where ever you can, a yoga mat at home, on the beach before you get in the water. Don't be afraid to ask other people questions too. Most people are friendly in the water but there can be some aggro now and then, and you may hear the word "kook" thrown around occasionally! Keep practicing, stay in the water as much as you can, and then ditch that board and get a real one. Good luck!

  2. 8 ft long, that's a huge Mal?? is this size what you already surfed on???because the weight and lift willl be different if its not.

Because its so long centring your body will be huge have your knees bent with your shoulders to the side but your head facing forward and upward (don't look down at the board, many beginners do this and it actually stuffs up your centre so you fall off)

You will need to do more power full strides to actually get on the wave, pull your body down the board if the nose is pointing down (if you dont you will nose dive and that's no good).

getting out will be harder if its a big swell roll your board over you (so your under it) if the wave is going to crash on you (Eskimo roll)

Once you see a set start paddling hard and fast.

once ready for a jump up,make sure you dont hang on to the rails (the side of the board) its easy to do if its a big board hands flat on the board for a easy motion jump up (this should be a flowing move) again make sure your knees are bent once your up... because the board is so long you should be able to ride the wave all the way in...

Good Luck and enjoy your ride : )

  3. Don't buy surfboards from Costco. #1. It kills the small surf shops who shape their own boards because Costco can afford to sell boards for $100. #2. You will have a lower quality board that is harder to ride/learn on. #3. If you bought your board from a surf shop, they would have advised you to take lessons, get comfortable surfing, then choose the board that is right for you.

None of those things help you now, but be aware next time.

As far as balence, stay in the middle of the board, left foot forward (unless you are goofy, inthat case right foot forward), and keep your weight evenly distributed between feet.  Use your arms to balence your upper body if needed at first.
