The Cartoon Gallery

Shop G43 (next to Lincraft), 2nd floor, Imperial Arcade, 168 Pitt Street

They moved to a new location last year. It's a bit hard to find it. If you're at the front of the Imperial Arcade (in Pitt Street), go straight ahead up both escalators through Lincraft, then walk straight ahead and you'll see a giant picture of Astroboy. You can't miss it. They have quite a number of DVDs, some art books, some bilingual manga, some cels, some English manga, and a limited range of Japanese and US CDs. Everything they sell is legit, but horrendously expensive when compared with other shops who import region 1 DVDs (most are around $79.95) and manga. If you are looking for something in particular, you may just want to use the website and not go to the shop. Very good service.

Kinokuniya Bookstore

Podium 2 (top floor), Shop RP2.02, The Galleries Victoria, 500 George Street

Part of a world wide Japanese chain of book shops. They carry manga, Japanese novels, magazines, DVDs and various reference books on Japanese language in English. The manga and anime artbook sections are generally in the right-hand section of the store. It's really hard to find anything, so it's best to ask the staff rather than walking aimlessly around until you find what you want.

Shop 402, Gallery Level, Mid City Centre, 197 Pitt Street

Practically opposite the Imperial Arcade (where the Cartoon Galley is), these guys have tons of modeling supplies and kits. The anime plastic model kits are at the back of the store to the left. They have a good range of mostly Bandai Gundam kits, but not as many general anime kits as other stores.

Has quite a extensive back catalogue of single back issues and graphic novels.

They have recently moved and also opened up a second shop. The Pitt street shop is pretty big and has a few region 1 DVDs and tons of figures. They stock the increasingly hard to find Viz graphic novels and magazines.

Astro Hobby (Modeller's World)

Shop G9, City Mark Building, 683 - 689 George Street

and Lower Ground Floor, Shop RLG21a, The Galleries Victoria, 500 George Street

These guys sell a lot of anime merchandise from Hong Kong, tons of Kubrick figures (those weird Lego-like mini figures), and lots of other bits (key rings etc), as well as model kits, and paints and models supplies. Neither shop stocks Garage Kits anymore. They also sell a weird mix of legit VHS and DVDs (US and Australian), and bootleg DVDs (and of course there's always tons more bootlegs than legit). And they've stopped selling SM CDs. Now they sell Ever Anime CDs ^_^. The stickers are boots too, but surprisingly everything else is legit.

Hondarake

Supposedly the largest second hand book shop in Sydney. Tons of Japanese, Chinese and English translated manga, hobby books, CDs, DVDs, and figures. Only recently found out about this shop, so I'll definitely check it out next time I'm in Sydney.

Movie Station

Upstairs from to Modellers World and Golden Winner. They sell mostly legit VCDs (be careful as some of the the VCDs are in DVD packages, and look like DVDs at first glance) and lots of bootleg DVDs. They have some J-Pop CDs, which I think are legit.

Laser City Pty Ltd.

Shop 16, 401 Sussex Street, Haymarket

Sells legit Hong Kong VCDs and DVDs. Not much here at all now in terms of anime. Except the dreaded Hong Kong bootleg DVDs. Urk. Much more reasonable on prices then what they used to be. But the staff are rude as h**l and they won't accept credit cards.

Windfair Books and Stationary

389 Sussex Street, Haymarket

Chinese newsagent. They have a lot of Chinese translated manga, some stationary, some Japanese magazines, and a small selection of legit anime VCDs, and some DVDs. And now they have bootleg DVDs. God, does ANYONE in Chinatown NOT stock these?

Po Hong Books and Stationary

The used to have a lot of merchandise, but now have virtually no anime goods.

Rong Bao Tang DVD, VCD, & CD

50 Dixon Street, Haymarket

They sell mostly Hong Kong VCDs and some DVDs, but they have an incredible amount of legit anime VCDs (mostly Cantonese dubbed or Chinese subbed). They also have a number of anime VCD boxed sets such as Macross 7, Gundam 08th MS Team, and Crayon Shin-chan. They also stock boxed VCD sets of Ultraman, Ultraseven, and early Kamen Rider. There are no anime CDs unfortunately. If you are looking for a HK movie on VCD, it's probably on the the shelf. I've never seen so many VCDs in the one spot. Recently they've started selling those wonderful bootleg DVDs. Oh hooray (yes I'm being sarcastic). This brings the amount of video shops in Chinatown selling 100% legit anime videos down to zero. The prices are quite reasonable for the legit stuff. I've noticed that some of the Hong Kong and Japanese movies they stock are bootlegs as well. Buyer beware.

Sanrio (formerly "Purrfect")

53 Dixon Street, Haymarket

This shop sells Hello Kitty stuff. That's it. I have never seen so much Hello Kitty stuff in my entire life. If it isn't here, I don't think they make it.

Game Infinity

Shop R1.30, Market City, 9 -13 Hay St, Haymarket (near Paddy's Market)

They carry a bunch of Japanese merchandise such as large Ultraman and Kamen Rider figures, Dragonball figures and others. This shop also has a weird mix of legit US DVDs, and bootleg DVDs (again mostly 'clones'). Some of the VCDs they stock are also legit, some are fake. A couple of really cool items they have include transformable Macross Valkayries, and they also have some Transformer toys. They also have a large Onizuka figure from GTO which rather cool ^_^. They also stock some CDs (SMs of course), and of course lots of anime related games.

Morning Glory (formerly "A - Zone")

Shop R1, 09B Market City, 9-13 Hay St, Haymarket (near Paddy's Market)

Used to stock lots of anime merchandise, but now sell none. The shop now stocks mostly "cute" toys (like that red and white "thing" from that Korean cartoon) and stuff that teenage girls go nuts about ^_^.

Maxims Video Company & Laser Disc

Shop 120 - 121, 8 Quay Street (Prince Centre), Haymarket

This is mostly a Hong Kong rental place that rents out VHS, DVD, LD, and VCDs. There's a small range of anime for rent (mostly in Chinese, none in English).

Another comic book store filled with Chinese translated manga.

Shinseido

Shop 602a, Level 6, Westfield Shopping Town, Chatswood

This is a small shop which caries legit Hong Kong movies on DVD and VCD, as well as CDs of Hong Kong pop stars, and some Japanese Idols and groups. Unfortunately they also have the dreaded 'clone' anime DVD boots (really badly done 'clones'). No legit anime merchandise here. You can get the same stuff in Chinatown, so it's probably not worth your while shopping here.

Phantom Zone

21 Anderson Street, Chatswood

and Shop 22c, Horwood Place, Parramatta

This small comic book chain has the usual English manga as well as a good range of anime merchandise including region 1 DVDs, some rather unusual merchandise and the occasional production cel. They can also get anything in the Previews catalogue.

Sherriffs Mini-Cars

127 Church Street, Parramatta

Many model markers from the early 1990's in Canberra would remember this shop (the Canberra shop closed in the mid 1990's). This is it's parent shop. They stock some garage kits, as well as some Bandai kits like Gundam and Evangelion kits. They also stock a good range of modelling supplies.

Other Shops of Note

There are plenty of comic book shops in Sydney and around the suburbs that stock anime and manga products. They're especially helpful if you're looking for graphic novels or single back issues. Also you can find bargains in 2nd hand CD and software shops sometimes (if you're lucky). Going into a few 2nd hand shops in George and Pitt streets, I found DVDs of region 1 "Tenchi in Tokyo Vol 4" and "Blue Submarine 6 Vol 1" for $30 each. I also found cheap copies of several region 4 titles.
