Anyone know of a good archeological site to write about?

So, I'm supposed to write an essay later this year for archeology, and I was wondering if anyone has some ideas for an interesting site. Unfortunately I can't actually go to the site to study it, I have to stick with the internet/books/journals for resources. What site(s) do you find interesting, and why?

  1. Stonehenge would be a good one. There are doing a dig there at the moment. I think you can find out about it at www.bbc.co.uk/timewatch

  2. Without a doubt, my choice would be Stonehenge because it's a prehistoric monument, datibng back to about 2200 BC !

  5. I'm going to assume (though I could be wrong) that your  course is focused on American archaeology.

There are a number of good sites to choose from for an essay. There is a large amount of data collected from excavations.

    Poverty Point

    Mesa Verde

    Russel Cave

    Sapelo Island

    Snaketown

    Ring Site, McIntosh County, Georgia

    Chaco Canyon

    Etowah

  6. best archeologiacal sites are at the banks of ancient rivers like Nile in Egypt, Indus in India and Pakistan, Euphrates in Iran & Iraq.

  7. the pyramids.

  8. Check out where they found the dead sea scrolls. I remember watching about it on the history channel. It was some pretty cool stuff. Plus there is alot about it so you wont be pressed for material.

  9. Meadows Rockshelter is a good site, its a controversial one too since the artifacts found date back to pre-clovis.  There is a ton you could write about there.

I included a wiki link so you can get a brief idea about what it is about, don't rely on wiki though for useful data.

  10. Chauvet is a good one (I think that's how it's spelled). It's a cave in France with the wall paintings, with some other things.

I'm partial to the Aubrey site in Texas, where the (potential) earliest dated Clovis artifacts have been found.

  11. Monte Verde

It is an open site in Chile that has incredible preservation.  Two distinct cultural components were discovered, both of which are believed to pre-date Clovis.  Pretty amazing to think people may have already been in South America 13k years ago.  Also, Dillehay (the director of archaeology at the site) has published an extensive 2-volume site report, which if your library does not have you can probably get on Inter-library loan.   Good luck!
