  1. What are you going to teach them? A game should teach them something. uuummmm...You can teach kindergardeners and preschoolers beats by having them play simple musical instruments, like those cheap rythm instruments that you can hit, etc. Have them hold the instruments, and move in a circle. Having them count 1 2 3 4 at the same time. Have them hit their instruments while they count. So when they are saying 1, they are also hitting their instruments one time. You can change the rythm by having them count 1 2 3 4 but have them hit only on 1 and 3. If you do just that, it teaches them quarter note values and half note values. To teach them whole note values..they just hit and say one but continue counting 2 3 4. That shows that the note is held for four beats. Keeping them moving helps them to feel the beat but if they cant move in a circle and do the rest, just have them sit and do the counting and hitting. I hope this helps. :-)

  2. Here's a good one I've used many times. Ask them questions where the answers are in plain sight or of things they see every day at pre-school. You must be sure your questions are at random and they come quickly. Ask questions like: What color are Samantha's shoes? Who's sitting behing Zack? Who's taller- Tim or Jasmine? Sky's the limit- be creative with the questions. A variation of the game: have the kids answer first without looking.

Another game they like: get a picture or an object or what ever. Conceal it. Reveal it a little at a time- show one section then another but not too much at first. Of course what ever the picture or object, it would have to be something familiar and would keep them guessing. A variation would be to put it into a box or bag or backpack or something and allow them to handle it without opening it then guess what's in there.

Finally, everyone likes a game of "Follow the Leader." The leader can hop around on one leg while going around in circles and singing "Old MacDonald" and everyone has to do as the leader does. Every minute or two the leader can choose a new one. He or she then can do anything and go anywhere.

  3. We break routine w/ a few minutes of "I See..." (describing an object w/out using it's name); Simple Treasure hunts- limiting the number of items/ depending on age....something red, something you can eat, and something you can hide in your hand, etc. Kids that are learning the alphabet/phonics can play a tag-type game (Make some cards w/ words, pile them face down, or fish-bowl them) the first kid pulls a tag, and gives the first sound of that word and the one who gets the word gets the next turn.

  4. A really good improv game for small children in preschool and kindergarten is animal, and 'grown up job' mimicking. You get all the kids on a carpeted area and then tell them to stand up.

When you call out an animal, tell them to mimick what the animal would do. Then get each child to pick an animal and lead the class in what the animal would do and the sound it would make. It's almost like monkey-see-monkey do. The same concept goes for jobs, and then you can throw in really funny ones to mix it all up, like peeling a banana, playing drums, or putting on winter clothes. I love when someone picks monkeys..it's the funiiest thing ever to watch.
